Do you recognize this: You stumble upon something on the internet and think “I should totally make one of those”?

This is what happened when I came across the Munny. You buy a blanc toy and have to do everything else yourself. Me and Oscar figured we would try our hands at creating said Munny and ordered one. I’ve started with collecting reference images and hopefully at least one picture of a Munny that is Guild Wars related. I couldn’t find any, apparantly I’m making the first Guild Wars Munny ever.

My hunt for reference images (ok, starting up Guild Wars and taking a bunch of screenshots) left me with the following:

[Show slideshow]

Last Tuesday it was finally there. My Munny and Oscar’s Rooz:

And yesterday we started sketching.

To be continued…

WordPress 3.0 has been released and I am loving the new admin theme. I’m sure there are many new and exciting changes that I am yet unaware of, but the most significant for me is that wp-lifestream, -the- plugin this theme was build around, is broken. Slowly but steadily the creator is releasing fixes, but whatever my problem might be; it hasn’t been fixed yet.

In other news; I’m creating my first wordpress plugin. It started as a plugin I could use for my Team Fortress 2 clan Gathering of Tweakers 3. But I decided to simplify it a bit and make it more general; a roster page for anything involving a team. Be it a roster page for your Guild Wars guild or for your Team Fortress 2 clan. Plans for the future involve support for multiple teams, grabbing avatars from steam and quite possibly other sites, wow armoury support, aion site support. Though I’m not sure about the later two, this one is meant to be quite generic and implementing something like that in an all-round plugin might be a bit too much, especially since there are probably plugins out there that already do that.

Anyway all those things are beyond what I can do with php at the moment, as this is my first php creation ever.

You’ve got an Android phone and have no idea which apps you want to use? Well join the club. In no way am I claiming that these apps are the best that are out there; but they are the apps that I enjoy using. I hope that by giving you some insight in which apps I am using, I can help you find some apps you might have been looking for.

Games:
My only demand for games on any phone are that you can do them while being distracted and that you can put them down easily. This is probably the reason why I haven’t found that many games that I actually play. When I say not that many I mean 2. One is the classic Fun Towers and the other is an even bigger classic Klondike Solitaire. So if you know an Android game that you find fun, please let me know.
Link to Klondike Solitaire
Link to Fun Towers

And the non-games:

Some of these are must-haves, others are just plain useful. Let’s start of with THE must-have app for android Advanced App Killer Free. Is your phone slowing down? That’s probably because there are a lot of apps running in the background, simply go to this app and kill all those pesky memory hogs and your phone is back to normal speed.
Link to Advanced App Killer Free

ASTRO File Manager: An all purpose tool for your Android file needs. You can backup apps to your SD card, you can get a detailed overview of which tasks are running on your droid and how much memory and CPU they use. It’s a lot more complicated then Advanced App Killer, but it’s also more powerful. I recommend you carry both on your droid.
Link to ASTRO File Manager

Gmote
A neat little remote control for your mp3s on your computer. You just have to install some software on your desktop and you can lazily choose and skip mp3s from your sofa.
Link to Gmote

Torrent-fu
I use uTorrent on my desktop and I was looking for an app to manage my torrents from home, this was it. You can check the status of your torrent and even add new torrent trough the build-in search engine. I do recommend using dyndns on your desktop so you don’t have to change your IP adress in the settings when it gets updated.
Link to Torrent-fu

Gmail unread count
It’s not an entire app to replace your gmail app, it is however a widget to replace your widget. It gives you some control, like choosing which icon to display and it has a small neat little number to show how many unread mails you have.
Link to Gmail unread count

Handcent SMS
An awesome SMS app. I have to say that I haven’t even tried how normal SMS work on android. This one was recommended to me by somebody who was raving about it and it is awesome! Like I said I can’t make comparisons, but just check it out. While you’re at it, also check out some of the font packs for this app, I love being in control over which fonts I use for reading my texts.
Link to Handcent SMS

eBuddy
I’ve tried Hi MSN before trying eBuddy but I have to say, eBuddy is simply the best (out of those two), it can sign into MSN, AIM, Hyves, Facebook and ICQ at once and it sets your status to (on eBuddy for Android) or something like that, which was something I always did with Hi MSN because I want people to know that I’m on my mobile and replying does take some extra time in comparison to using a keyboard.
Link to eBuddy

AndChat
I haven’t used it that much, but it’s an IRC client for Android. Useful for dull train rides.
Link to AndChat

Twitdroid
A twitter client for Android, what can I say? From the one’s I’ve tried this one is just the best. You can post pictures directly to Twitpic, it checks your tweets at a set interval and you can post Tweets from it.
Link to Twitdroid

Google Sky Maps
Stargazing much? Wondering which stars you are looking at? Then this app is for you, it’s that simple.
Link to Google Sky Maps

I do have a lot of non-sense apps besides this. Like a Duke Nukem soundboard, a Mr. T wobblehead that says “I pity the fool”, a compass, flashlight, drumkit but they’re just the kind of apps that you download, use and never really delete because you have to show the awesomeness of your ‘droid to others. You know you have apps liks them too! Everybody with a smartphone has.

Now to the unrelated note: Android 2.1 for HTC Hero has been pushed back to June so I am going to install a custom 2.1 ROM on my Hero. I will share my findings, troubles and general rage here. So do check back sometime next week.

As my old host has put up some limitations with outside connections I’m switching hosts. This new host also comes with a range of new stuff: cheaper, higher datalimit, more diskspace and other means of getting in touch with customer support then a ticket system. Which also means that I’m moving my portfolio there too sometime in the future (got to be done sometime October).

The problem is the who.is transfer though. It’s taking longer then I wish it would, this is because joker.com sends a confirmation mail which I actually have to cancel instead of confirm. If I haven’t cancelled by the 20th of April they will carry on. I did, however, already backup my site (with the exception of the database), so I can’t really work on my theme. Well I could, but that would mean either another backup or checking which files I’ve changed. Hell, even this post could be a problem since I’m also testing the post image function that comes with this theme. You see; a post is just another database entry, but the image is part of the hosting. However it’s just one file, I’m sure I can find that.

As nobody will notice, this site is undergoing changes. I am going to re-do the site as a blog and with that comes a new theme, the deletion of some of my portfolio stuff (as that has been moved to http://wbaars.nl) and new fancy plugins. So, don’t complain that the site nobody visits suddenly looks off, because doing a new theme is a tedious process for me and I just can’t be bothered to create a test wordpress install and not do it on the live version. Yes, it’s not the proper way to work. Then again, this site has 1 visit a month and it is not my portfolio (where I do have a somewhat professional approach to working with the site).

Leaving your mark in Team Fortress 2 is easier then it seems. Users can create their own sprays or download them from a site like gamesprays. How to use them, or how to make normal (transparant) sprays can also be found on over there. As are all the sprays I’ve created so far and (hopefully) this tutorial.

So you want your sprays to have that extra pop? You want them to move and shake a little? Well this handy little guide will tell you how. Here’s what you need:

Photoshop C.S. or something simular like GIMP (I’m using PS for this tutorial)

Team Fortress 2

Winrar

Notepad

Vtex (provided)

Ok, here’s the spray we’ll be making:

It’s important to remember that there is a size limitation of 120KB, which is why we are creating these sprays at 128×128 pixels instead of 256×256 pixels. The game itself will enlarge them to 256×256, albeit a bit blurry (as seen in the example). Due to this size limitation, there’s also a limit to the number of frames. It’s a bit touch and go there, I found that 5 frames is safe.

First we’re making the frames we’re using. Create a new document in photoshop at 126×126 pixels and a transparent background. Write a 1 in the center of the frame (in courier sans). Save this image as .psd so you can later repeat the steps below for the 2 and the 3, simply by changing the writing.

Next rightclick on the layer and choose rasterize type.

Now we have a pixelated 1 in the middle of an empty document.
Next click the channel tab and the new channel tab to create an alpha channel.

Using the magic wand selection tool, click outside of the 1 and make this black in the alpha layer.

Remember:

White = Visible

Black = Fully Transparent

Shades of Gray = Partial Transparency

Now it’s time to save the file as spray001.tga

Repeat the above steps for the 2 and the 3 and place these three files in the same folder with filenames ending with 00# where # is the number of the frame, 1 being the first frame.

When you’re done you should have three files: spray001.tga for the 1, spray002.tga for the 2 and spray003.tga for the 3.

Now it’s time to convert the file to a spray for Team Fortress. The method I’m using is something that I’ve taken from another website which has been taken down now, so I’m hosting the file myself. But the credits go to a guy named SMiDDY. I have left the original readme.txt in the rar, so credits go where credits are due.

First download this file and unrar it somewhere on your computer.

Now put all three .tgas in the hl2/materialsrc/animated folder inside the folder that was made when un-raring the file.

Edit the spray.txt file (in the same folder) in notepad and replace the endframe value to the amount of frames you have, 3 in this case.

Run convert.bat – your .vtf will appear at hl2/materials/animated/
Note: If your .vtf file is over 120kb, you will have to go back and edit the amount of frames you have of the size of your frames until they are under 120kb, otherwise you will not be able to use the spray.

I advise to rename the file now to something like: counting-ani.vtf

Put the .vtf file into <steamfolder>\steamapps\<your_steam_ID>\team fortress 2\tf\materials\VGUI\logos\

Open notepad and make a new file and put in this text:

LightmappedGeneric”
{
“$basetexture” “vgui\logos\gabedance”
“$decal” “1″
“$decalscale” “1″

}

Then save it as counting-ani.vmt in the same dir as you saved the .vtf (or a different name if you renamed the file differently).

And that’s all, fire up Team Fortress and test out your new spray.

Graphic design is all about inspiration and clever stealing. It’s a good thing there are a lot of people out there willing to share their stuff for you to steal and make your own (in a way). One of the things I want to do with my new site is share some of my favourite resources I have stumbled upon in the previous month and possibly start to write my own tutorials, but that’s for another time. So here goes, the first in (hopefully) many monthly resource picks.

I’ll start of with Pictaculous a wonderful tool to get a colour palette to go with your image. Please note: It doesn’t work well with CMYK images, so be sure to upload the RGB version.

Next is a tutorial I ran into to create a smashing 3D text that looks natural using both illustrator and photoshop. I like this one, because I rarely run into tutorials that also use illustrator. You can find it here over at Six Rivisions.

If there’s one thing I hate, it’s using a script letter. But every once in a while you get a design that just calls for a hand-written font. The Calligrapic section over at Font Squirrel has a lot of very good handwritten fonts.

And last but not least, four photoshop brush sets I have found and saved this month which I think are awesome. Click on the images to go to their download page on DeviantArt.

I have some good news and some bad news.

The bad: Howmuchfortheape.com went down. Why? Simple, the idea behind the site was that I and some friends of mine had a place to dump our writing, when we did any. The problem with this is that those friends and myself also have lives, jobs and even blogs to maintain. We just didn’t get to writing anything that would be good for the site. We have tried to think of subjects, but even that wasn’t much good. I myself tried to find a new angle to write about second life, but that program just scared the living daylight out of me.

The good: Howmuchfortheape.com went live today. But wait, didn’t you just say it went down? I did. I’m turning it into a personal portfolio site for myself. Or at least, something like it. Basically a personal homepage. It will hold a blog where I will still write stuff. My stories from the old site will also be featured somewhere on the this site and I am going to host my game screenshots on it, since I’m already hosting them on this web-space and the plug-in I’m using now is so much easier then the one I currently have.

That was all, I would like to thank everybody that made this site possible, mainly Mike who inspired me to make it in the first place.

It was a fun dream while it lasted. Farewell apeshit, I will miss you.

I arrive at the campsite; this is going to be some happening. I can feel the Rasta man vibration in the air. Setting up the tents was hell, to many cars, to close to my tent poles. I’m glad that’s over with, and I’m gladder that nobody saw me scraping that car.
My photographer and I are rolling our first joint, somewhere far from our encampment. “This is it man, total relaxation, this is the feeling you’re looking for, fuck it, throw your notepad away, you’re done”. My photographer is an optimistic man, from time to time. He also is a very drunk man, his body can’t handle alcohol and he’s had plenty on the drive over.
“No man, fuck it, I’m going to the festival, this can’t be it” and that was that, we parted ways as I picked up our stoner, Chris, who was also a part of our trip.

The trip to the festival was a disappointment; no reggae bands yet, just a MC and a DJ. We decided to check out the craft market we heard about. Terrible paranoia crept upon us the moment we entered. Every stand had it’s own music. Which in some way all had very, very loud bass. We rushed through, clearly not drunk enough to handle this. A drunken mind can shut out all the noise and focus on the important stuff. Sadly, a drunken mind decides for itself just what the important stuff is. My findings are that this mostly results in pussy and beer. A good combination, unless you’re drinking one from the other. I’m straying from the point.

Terrible gibberish at the campsite; money makes the world go round, so does self-made beer. These Belgium’s are weird people. Their language is almost identical to mine; however I don’t understand a thing they are saying. The true Reggae Feeling is C. What C? What are you talking about man? You’re useless, all of you.

My photographer and myself find ourselves reunited somehow, at the craft market. My mind is in such a state that it can filter out all the music. This did result in buying a terrible Hawaiian shirt together with my photographer, but hey, chick must think we are hot now. I mean, look at us.
After leaving the craft market, we return to with our journey. We were searching for something, it isn’t quite clear what it was. But man, are these girls hot. I decide to look at the thing in my hand, a yellow coke bottle… What is this? Reggae Geel coke bottles? What’s the use? Why? Why would a big ass corporation like Coca Cola be interested in a reggae festival, what’s the point? I can’t grasp is, fuck man, what’s next… This is the end. Next thing you know I’ll be putting on a rubber in the shape of a coke bottle. Fuck man, why not? The fuckers will get away with it.

I find myself at the campsite, totally relaxed. The boom box is playing the Toy Dolls this has to be the Reggae Feeling, escaping the mayhem and craziness of a festival, the conversations that you forget only seconds after they end. Escaping from the never-ending reggae with some British punk. Yes, this is true relaxation. It might have been the guy who I’ve never seen and pressed a joint in my hand, only to pass out seconds later. I don’t know.

Well well, that’s that..
Beer more beer, why the hell here?
Ok give the man paper and some towels.

This morning has been rough; to say the least… now after finding some shade and beer the recovering has began. Just lost three bucks in poker, which is quite the accomplishment seeing we were playing for cents. I lost the Reggae Feeling, or I might never have found it. My appointed photographer is rambling about truth and the lack of it. There is no Reggae Feeling.
This is quite disturbing coming from a black man with a dreaded mohawk. Fuck, he is the closest thing we have to a Rasta. The search goes on. There will be no stopping. I did realise that there are less drunken idiots here then at a regular festival. There might be some connection.

There is some truth…. somewhere.

Fucking wasps, everywhere. What do these little fuckers want? I found the cocktail bar and ever since they are bothering me even more. My drink of choice is a Rasta safari. But in my other hand I’m holding my vodka caffeine. Bloody brilliant combination if you ask me. My photographer is out of collision, due to too many THC, eating in a horrible deadly fashion. He’s tripping by the campsite. I think we won’t see him for the next couple of hours. He needs beer, that’s right it’s a bloody festival. What is this Reggae Feeling, I wonder. Maybe I’ll find it, later, after organising this mess, these terrible notes. My photographer deemed it necessary to make some additions. So many possibilities.
Maybe it is the feeling of relaxation when retreating with some punk music. Every pie has it’s own flavour. I didn’t go backstage. The big fucker at the entrance said my press pass wasn’t valid. And since it wasn’t, there was no point. I didn’t think of the possibility that they wouldn’t believe me. And why would they hide the Reggae Feeling back there.
It’s fucking Woodstock in 2004. There is almost a religious aspect to this festival, the almighty Jah and king Rastafari, the terrible dictator who some Rasta’s believe is Jesus. They are the Jews and Ethiopia is the Promised Land. Holy mount Zion.

What is this terrible thing eating me from the inside. My vision has gone blurry, my balance is gone and I can’t make a coherent sentence leave my mouth. My liver has gone on strike. Who can blame him? He’s been working hard for two days now. My photographer is still missing, have you seen him? He’s black, just like you. Terrible gibberish around me about lighters, why? It’s not that you need it; your cigarette is lit.

The night ended in a blur and when the morning came most tents around mine were already gone. My photographer was packing his and offered to help me pack mine when I recovered. I needed to take a dumb, but the toilets were all messed up. Man, they threw one over and put it back up, shit was coming from under the door. Fuck this I thought; let’s go. After packing the stuff we drove back to our home. Making a stop only to take a dump at the nearest gas station. Did I find the Reggae Feeling? I don’t know. Maybe it was the feeling when entering a trance like state while Skanking. Maybe it was the common feeling of togetherness that this festival had over it. Who knows? Frankly, who cares?
